Spring into Spring!

18/09/2021

Spring has sprung! The days are warmer and longer, birds are singing their songs and baby animals are being born. Buds are blooming and trees are sprouting new growth. It really is the most wonderful time of the year.

In our yoga practice, we align ourselves with the cycles of nature. The element correlating to the season of spring is wood, symbolising new growth. The organs we work with are the liver and the gallbladder. The liver is responsible for detoxifying the body after the heaviness and often stagnant energy of the winter. Spring is a perfect time of year to detox or spring clean – your mind, your body and your home.

We can stimulate the cleansing of the body by eating seasonally and eating lighter. Great foods for the liver include ginger, garlic, carrot, broccoli and kale.

We can improve the energy flow to our liver and gallbladder organs, helping them to work optimally by practicing the following yoga poses:

Child’s Pose

A restful, healing pose which is very calming to the nervous system. Take your knees wide to target the liver meridian. Spleen, kidney and urinary bladder will also be stimulated. Rest your forehead down and surrender gently for 2-5 minutes

Dragonfly

This shape also targets the liver, spleen, kidney and urinary bladder. If you have tight hamstrings, you may wish to pop cushions underneath them or bend up through your knees. Lean forward gently, focusing on opening the backs of the legs rather than collapsing through the diaphragm. Rest your head on a bolster or in your hands, close your eyes and soften in for 2-5 minutes.

Malasana

This pose is great for stimulating digestion. It helps the body to release toxins and waste. If your heels don’t reach the ground, you can pop a soft towel or blanket under them. Breathe slowly and smoothly for 2-3 minutes before gently coming out by straightening through the knees into standing.

We run our yoga classes online at the moment, please feel free to join us on Monday’s and Wednesday’s at 6pm. Bookings can be made here https://excelphysio.com.au/physio-appointments-at-excel/ or by calling us on 85991801.
